News from Honey CottageApril 2008: Honey Cottage
Prize Draw Winners arrive, so does the new sofa and our new look
website! Kevin & Lisa and their two children Owen & Alfie from Grimsby (pictured) arrived on 18th April. This was their first holiday in Devon and in the words of Lisa, they "loved every minute". It was a pleasure to have them stay with us and we hope to see them again sometime in the future. Also this month, our brand new 3 piece suite arrived, a luxury leather 3 seat sofa and 2 chairs. Believe me, it is extremely comfortable! Photos of it can be seen on our guided tour page. Also, at the end of April our new look website went live, I hope you like it. It's a little overdue, as with anything when you're in the business (I'm a web designer) your own things get neglected in favour of work for other people! Essentially the content is the same, but I do have plans to add more in the near future. If you have any comments or notice any errors, I'd be very grateful if you'd let me know.

2008: Devon Air Ambulance Collects Donation We are very happy to support the Devon Air Ambulance Trust and hope to be able to raise more money for them in the future. Our thanks also go to Graham and Glad Pearson of Cleethorpes who's tireless efforts organizing the prize draw raised a total over £1300 for charity. Well done to you both!
January 2008: Spring and Snow all in the same week! The end of this month has brought the first snow of the winter to Honey Cottage, albeit brief! The plants are confused as the snow drops have already been and gone. Now the daffodils are well on their way and the roses covered with new buds. The wildlife are also determined that spring is here, the pond is full of frog spawn already and the birds are starting to build nests. Will the mild weather continue or will be be plunged back into the cold? The Met Office forecast is a good place to find the answer to that question! We have ordered a new three piece suite for the lounge at Honey Cottage. The old suite is starting to look a bit grubby and with hindsight cream was not a sensible colour! The new suite should be here in about 8 weeks we're told, just in time for the new season.
The cottage is now decorated for Christmas and we are booked for the entire 2007 festive period. However, if there any Christmas revelers that would like to book early for Christmas or New Year 2008/9 you are very welcome to do so. Please note that due to Boxing Day falling on a Friday this year, we have temporarily altered our changeover day to a Saturday just for the 2008 Christmas period only. The North Sea Lions Club have held their Grand Christmas draw on the 28th November 2007 and the winner of the holiday at Honey Cottage in April 2008 has been announced as Mark Greaves from Cleethorpes. (See newspaper cutting from the Grimsby Telegraph on the right - eek that's me, second from the right!) The draw was a great success and raised over £1300 which will be donated to various charities including the Humberston Hydrotherapy Pool and, at our request, the Devon Air Ambulance who will get £135. Once again we are very happy to have been able to help raise money for all the worthy causes and we intend to donate a similar holiday in 2009. (Date to be confirmed).
September 2007: Our Second Season draws to a close! Once again another season has ended in the blink of an eye. Just like last year we have had a very busy year in spite of the appalling summer weather. We have met some lovely people and made some good friends this year, many of whom we hope to see again. Thank you so much to everyone for your kind comments in the guest book and an extra big thank you to those who have brought gifts for the cottage, it is a lovely gesture and our honey pot collection is coming on very well! Probably the most significant change for us this year is that the independent Tourism Association at we belonged to previously (the Devonshire Heartland Tourism Association or the DHTA) has recently ceased to exist and has been swallowed up by the Heart of Devon Partnership administered by Devon County Council. After a great deal of deliberation we have elected not to join the new partnership. This does not mean our standards do not meet the required level, far from it. We still pride ourselves in making sure the cottage meets the highest possible standards for all our guests. Our reasons are purely financial, simply that the benefits do not justify the increased costs. The main consequence of this decision is that we are no longer able to advertise in the Devon Tourist Information Centers or in the "Essential Devon" brochure. So if you have previously found us via the Tourism Information Office or Devon Holiday brochures, rest assured just because we no longer appear on the accommodation list, it does not mean we are no longer in business, it is very much business as usual! We hope that everyone will continue to find us via our website and contact us directly either by phone or email.
Another Holiday at Honey Cottage donated to charity. Following on from the success of the raffle for the Grimsby Breast Care unit Pink Rose appeal, we have donated another week holiday at Honey Cottage (18th - 25th April 2008) to charity. This holiday is the first prize in the Christmas raffle organized by the Grimsby Lions, the proceeds of the raffle will go to the Hydrotherapy Pool at Humberston Park Special School near Grimsby to help disabled children and also to the Devon Air Ambulance. Tickets are on sale now, the draw will take place on the 28th November.
Winners of the Honey Cottage Holiday in the Pink Rose Appeal Prize Draw arrive in Devon. The winners of the Honey Cottage prize in the Pink Rose Appeal draw unfortunately had to cancel their prize holiday at the last minute. However, they kindly transferred the holiday to their friends, Mr & Mrs Marriot of Immingham in Lincolnshire. We were very happy to welcome Denise and Jeff to Honey Cottage on the 20th April. We are extremely pleased to report that they enjoyed their stay with us and described the cottage as an ideal getaway. Their entry in the guest book reads: "Thank you for a lovely week, the cottage is first class. Very peaceful and relaxing". Also excellent news from the Pink Rose Appeal chairman is that the draw in which the Honey Cottage Holiday prize was raffled raised an excellent £620 for the Pink Rose Appeal. We are very happy to have been able to help.
Honey Cottage window replacement commences. Some of the windows at Honey Cottage are beginning to show their age. We have now started a program of gradual replacement of all the windows. However, as Honey Cottage is a grade 2 listed building, we have to replace the windows with traditional windows that have to be specially made. Our skillful carpenter, Gary Chenery (also based in Lapford, Devon), has already made and replaced the most badly effected window in the master bedroom. The remaining windows will be replaced gradually over the next year. This work will only be carried out during periods when the cottage is not occupied so not to interfere with our guests holidays. In addition to this, the kitchen and bathroom have both been newly decorated ready for the new holiday season.
Win a week in Honey Cottage with the Pink Rose Appeal Prize Draw. The Breast Care Unit at the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in my home town of Grimsby is raising funds to help build a new unit to cope with the increased number of patients as the current unit is too small to cope with demand. This cause is particularly close to my heart as my own Mum has been undergoing treatment at this unit. We have donated a week (20th - 27th April 2007) to be raffled off as a prize in a draw to help this very worthy cause. The draw will be made on 23rd March at the Beachcomber in Cleethorpes.
Happy Birthday Sally !! Sally from Droitwich has just had her second visit to Honey Cottage. Her partner booked a weekend as a special birthday surprise because she liked it so much here on her first visit! We wish Sally a very Happy Birthday and hope to see her again sometime! If any guests are planning a birthday surprise or celebrating an anniversary, let me know and I will do my best to help with any arrangements for example ordering flowers or booking restaurants etc.
Honey Cottage has it's 1st marriage proposal !! Congratulations go to Steve and Luisa from Birmingham on their engagement! Steve used Honey Cottage as the ideal romantic setting to pop the question to his girlfriend Luisa. I'm happy to say that Honey Cottage's magic obviously worked perfectly as she accepted. Good luck with the wedding and best wishes for the future to you both. If any guests are considering popping the question to your loved one, let me know and I will do my best to help with any arrangements for example ordering flowers or booking restaurants etc.
Phew
and thanks!
Changes:
We briefly altered our changeover day to Saturday after the summer holidays. However, we have found the logistics of a Saturday too difficult to manage so we have now reverted back to a Friday changeover. I hope this doesn't put anyone off visiting us again and remember that out of peak season we will do our best to accommodate you, so please ask if you require a different combination of dates. We have a new email address: info@honeycottagedevon.com please use this in preference to the old address honey.cottage@hotmail.co.uk. The old address is still monitored so don't worry if you have used this, you will get a reply! Like everyone, our electricity prices have gone through the roof this year. Rather than passing on the extra cost on to everyone through our rental prices we have decided that the fairest way to handle it is to start charging guests for electricity they actually use. In future the meter will be read at the start and the end of the holiday and a charge will be made for the units that you have used. The rate will be the same as our suppliers charge us (11p per unit at the time of writing). Other great news is that South West Water have at last finished digging up the road in the village, no more road closures - hurrah! Thanks again to everyone and we hope to see you soon! Helen
